Yesterday I was notified that I drew a tag on Maryland’s Blackwater wildlife management area to hunt the diminutive sika deer. These secretive elk-like animals were imported from Japan in the early 1900s. They have taken so well to the marshy environment of Maryland and Virginia’s eastern shore that they must be hunted hard to control the population. So I’m taking a day off work to do my humanitarian duty, and maybe procure a sika stag or a hind (a female) for the grill. I’ll be taking my new Savage Model 220 F slug gun for this operation, and I’ll also throw in a fishing rod, just in case the striped bass are biting in the nearby Chesapeake bay. Deer, fish, weather and god permitting, it sounds like an NRA Country kind of day to me.
